Origin: Papua New Guinea & northern Australia
Iriatherina werneri is native to shallow, still or slow-moving water bodies in southern Papua New Guinea and northern Australia, typically among dense aquatic vegetation. Males develop spectacular thread-like extensions to the dorsal and anal fins and the first dorsal fin ray. A delicate species best kept in a species tank or with very small, non-competitive tankmates.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard water; very stable conditions. Tank: 40 L+ species or nano tank; still or very gentle filtration, dense planting. Feeding: Omnivore; micro-foods, fine flakes, baby brine shrimp, and micro-worms. Behaviour: Gentle, slow-moving; males display elaborate fin extensions constantly. Compatibility: Species tank or with very small, peaceful nano fish only.
