Hypancistrus sp. (L091)
Also known as: Three Beacon Pleco, L091 Pleco, Tri-spot Xingu Pleco
Origin: Rio Xingu, Brazil
The Three Beacon Pleco (L091) is one of the most uniquely patterned loricariids from the Rio Xingu. As its name describes, three conspicuous white spots are positioned at key points along the body — at the snout, at mid-body, and near the tail base — against an otherwise pitch-black ground colouration. This distinctive minimalist patterning makes it instantly recognisable and highly collectible.
L091 demands the same high standard of water quality required of all Xingu endemics: warm, pristine, well-oxygenated water with very strong flow. It is an omnivore that accepts algae wafers, sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, driftwood, and protein supplements. Driftwood is especially important for cave provision and supplemental nutrition. Regular large water changes are essential.
As a semi-aggressive species, L091 is best kept as a solitary specimen in a Xingu biotope display aquarium. Active mid-water fish such as larger tetras and flag cichlids provide movement and visual interest at upper levels without competing for bottom territories. The exceptional rarity of this species in the hobby reflects both its limited range and the difficulty of collection from the fast-flowing Xingu rapids.
Water: pH 6.0–7.0, temperature 26–30°C, GH 2–8, KH 1–4; very strong flow and oxygenation critical. Tank: 150 L minimum; rocky Xingu decor, deep cave structures, powerful canister plus powerhead. Feeding: Omnivore; algae wafers, sinking pellets, blanched veg, driftwood, frozen protein. Breeding: Cave spawner; extremely rarely achieved; very demanding Xingu conditions required. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive with conspecifics; peaceful with robust mid-water Xingu species.
