Glyptothorax trilineatus
Also known as: Three-lined Torrent Catfish, Striped Torrent Catfish, Himalayan Torrent Catfish
Origin: South Asia (Himalayan foothills, India & Nepal)
Glyptothorax trilineatus inhabits clear, fast-flowing streams draining the Himalayan foothills across northern India and Nepal, where it clings to submerged boulders in water of remarkable clarity and low temperature. Three pale stripes run the length of its mottled brown body — effective camouflage against the light-dappled pebble backgrounds of its native habitat. Like all Glyptothorax, it possesses a thoracic adhesion apparatus for anchoring against current.
This species requires cool, highly oxygenated water and will suffer in anything approaching tropical temperatures. An unheated or chilled aquarium with strong flow over smooth substrate best replicates its natural habitat. It is an undemanding feeder, accepting sinking wafers, frozen invertebrates, and biofilm scrapings equally.
G. trilineatus is rarely encountered in the trade but occasionally available from specialist importers sourcing from South Asian wholesalers. It is an excellent species for keepers interested in Himalayan foothills biotope aquaria alongside hillstream loaches, stone-loach species, and cold-adapted danios.
Water: 18–24°C, pH 6.5–7.5, very high O₂; unheated or cooled tank required in warm climates. Tank: 200 L minimum; smooth pebble substrate; powerful directional flow; minimal decor to allow current paths. Feeding: Algae wafers, sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp; grazes biofilm naturally. Breeding: Not documented in aquaria; likely requires cool water, increased flow, and rocky spawning sites. Compatibility: Peaceful; best with other Himalayan hillstream species — Homaloptera, Sewellia, cold Danio spp.
