Gasterosteus aculeatus
Origin: Europe
The Three-Spined Stickleback is one of Europe's most familiar and widespread small fish, found across virtually the entire continent in ponds, ditches, and streams. During the spring breeding season, males develop spectacular crimson undersides and turquoise eyes and construct elaborate nests from plant material, guarding the eggs and fry with considerable dedication. An ideal and ecologically appropriate species for native wildlife ponds, children's discovery ponds, and shallow tub gardens.
Hardy and largely self-sufficient in a naturalistic pond with native aquatic plants. Feed in a controlled setup with small live foods, frozen daphnia, micro-worms, or small pond sticks. Males become highly territorial during spring breeding — provide adequate space and plant cover. Compatible with other small native species but may be outcompeted by larger fish. Fully cold-hardy; no winter preparation needed.
