Satanoperca leucosticta
Also known as: Three-spot Eartheater (Wild), Spotted Eartheater
Origin: Guyana, Suriname
Satanoperca leucosticta is one of the most attractively patterned eartheaters, its silver body bearing three clearly defined black spots — at the dorsal origin, mid-flank, and caudal peduncle — overlaid with a dense scattering of iridescent blue-white scales. Wild specimens from the Essequibo and Demerara systems tend to display finer, more vivid patterning than commercially bred individuals.
This species is among the more forgiving Satanoperca in terms of water requirements, tolerating soft to moderately soft conditions and a wider temperature range. However, it remains sensitive to poor water quality and high nitrates, so efficient filtration and regular maintenance are essential. A deep sand substrate accommodates its sifting behaviour.
Peaceful by Satanoperca standards, this species works well in large community aquaria. It is a biparental mouthbrooder and relatively straightforward to breed once settled. Groups of four to six allow natural pair formation without excessive competition.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft to moderately soft (1-8 dGH); avoid high nitrate levels above 20 ppm. Tank: Minimum 280L; fine sand 8+ cm, open swimming areas, driftwood and root structures at periphery. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia; live worms enhance colouration. Breeding: Biparental mouthbrooder; spawns on substrate or flat stone; fry hardy once free-swimming. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent with large tetras, pencilfish, hatchetfish, corydoras.
