Trichopodus trichopterus
Origin: Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar)
The Three Spot Gourami is named for its three black spots — one on each flank and one at the eye — on a shimmering blue-silver body. One of the most robust and widely kept labyrinth fish in the hobby, it adapts to a broad range of water conditions and is forgiving of beginner mistakes. Males can be territorial with conspecifics and may fin-nip slower tank mates, so careful selection of companions is advisable.
Provide a planted aquarium with floating plants for bubble-nest building. Feed a varied diet of quality flake, micro-pellets, frozen bloodworm, and Artemia. Keep only one male per tank unless the aquarium is very large and heavily planted. Avoid housing with very fin-nipped or slow species such as bettas or fancy guppies. Tolerates a wide range of water parameters — one of the most adaptable gouramis.
