Thysochromis ansorgii
Also known as: Five-spot Cichlid, Ansorge's Cichlid
Origin: West Africa (Niger Delta, Nigeria, Ghana)
Thysochromis ansorgii is a robust and attractive West African cichlid found across Nigeria, Ghana, and adjacent countries in slow-flowing rivers and streams with dense marginal vegetation. It is commonly called the Five-spot Cichlid for the row of five prominent dark spots running along the lateral line. The body is stocky and moderately deep, with a warm golden-to-olive sheen and touches of green iridescence on the scales.
T. ansorgii is a cave-spawner or crevice-spawner with biparental care. Both parents defend the nest and fry vigorously, and pairs form strong bonds. Despite modest size, the species can be moderately territorial during breeding, particularly in confined spaces.
Soft to moderately hard water at pH 6.0–7.5 suits this adaptable species. A 100 L aquarium with plentiful hiding spots, caves, and marginal planting to break sightlines is ideal. T. ansorgii is an underrated species that rewards its keeper with entertaining behaviour and attractive colouration.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 3–15, KH 2–10). Tank: 100 L minimum; bogwood, plants, and caves to break sightlines and provide spawning sites. Feeding: Quality cichlid pellets, flake, and live or frozen earthworms, bloodworm, and brine shrimp. Breeding: Cave-spawner; strong pair bond and biparental fry defence — reduce tankmate numbers when breeding. Compatibility: Pairs with larger peaceful tetras, mid-sized West African fish; avoid delicate nano species.
