Garra tibanica
Also known as: Tibani Garra, Jordan Garra
Origin: Jordan, Israel (Jordan River basin)
Garra tibanica is native to the Jordan River system and associated drainages in Jordan and Israel, inhabiting fast-flowing, rocky streams and springs with clear, cool to warm water. As a Middle Eastern Garra species, it is accustomed to relatively alkaline, harder water than many of its tropical Asian relatives. Its oral disc is well developed, allowing firm adhesion to smooth rock surfaces in strong flow.
In the aquarium, Garra tibanica requires moderately hard, slightly alkaline to neutral water with good oxygenation and a rocky or sandy substrate with significant water movement. It is generally peaceful and does not harm plants. Because of its Middle Eastern origin it tolerates a somewhat wider temperature range than strictly tropical species, including cooler aquariums at 18–20°C.
Feeding is centred on algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and blanched vegetables. Garra tibanica also grazes diatoms and biofilm from all tank surfaces energetically. It is an unusual and interesting addition to Middle Eastern biotope aquariums or temperate aquariums requiring a natural algae-grazing resident.
Water: 18–26°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate to hard (GH 10–25); cool, well-oxygenated conditions preferred. Tank: 80 L minimum; rocky substrate, moderate to strong current; tolerates cooler temperatures. Feeding: Herbivore; algae wafers, spirulina, blanched vegetables, biofilm grazing. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful; good tankmate for other Middle Eastern or temperate community fish.
