Pethia ticto
Also known as: Ticto Barb, Two-spot Barb, Firefly Barb
Origin: South Asia
Pethia ticto is a widespread and adaptable barb from South Asia, found across India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka in a variety of river and stream habitats. It bears two characteristic dark spots — one below the dorsal fin and one near the tail — and breeding males display striking red fin accents. Undemanding in care, it is an active schooler that provides constant movement and interest in a community aquarium.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 5–18). Tank: 80 L minimum; open swimming space with planted areas and hiding spots. Feeding: Omnivore — flakes, pellets, live/frozen invertebrates, occasional vegetable matter. Behaviour: Active schooler; keep 8+ to minimise any fin-nipping tendency. Compatibility: Good with robust community fish; avoid very slow or delicate species.
