Myleus tiete
Also known as: Tiete Myleus, Tietê Pacu
Origin: Tietê River, São Paulo, Brazil
Myleus tiete is one of the more localised Myleus species, endemic to the Tietê River drainage within the Atlantic Forest biome of São Paulo state in Brazil. Its restricted range and rarity in the hobby make it a prized find for specialist collectors. It is a large, deep-bodied silver pacu that somewhat resembles M. schomburgkii in body shape but lacks the bold vertical bar — instead displaying more subtle lateral markings and slightly cooler temperature preferences reflecting its subtropical origin.
Because of its origin in a cooler Atlantic Forest river, Myleus tiete tolerates — and may indeed prefer — slightly lower temperatures than most Amazonian pacu species, making it suitable for subtropical setups alongside species like Gymnogeophagus or large temperate tetras. It still requires a very large aquarium of 1000 litres or more, powerful filtration, and regular water changes.
Diet follows the standard Myleus pattern of predominantly plant material supplemented with fresh fruit and quality pellets. This species is peaceful, benefits from conspecific company, and is compatible with other large, non-aggressive South American fish. Its rarity in the trade means specimens should be sourced from reputable specialist importers.
Water: Moderately soft, pH 6.0–7.5, 22–27°C; tolerates cooler temperatures better than Amazon congeners. Tank: 1000 L minimum; open swimming space; fine sand substrate and robust décor. Feeding: Vegetables, fruit, algae-based pellets; occasional protein supplement acceptable. Breeding: No documented captive breeding; rare in trade. Compatibility: Peaceful with large non-aggressive SA and subtropical species.
