Apolemichthys kingi
Origin: South Africa, SW Indian Ocean
The Tiger Angelfish is an exceptionally rare color variant of the King Angelfish (Apolemichthys kingi) from South African waters, featuring bold irregular dark barring overlaid on the classic dark body, creating a tiger-stripe effect unique among angelfish. Virtually impossible to source outside South Africa, it is among the rarest angelfish ever maintained in private collections. Its extreme rarity, beauty, and challenging dietary requirements make it suitable only for the most experienced marine angelfish keepers.
Requires a very large, well-established FOWLR or mixed system (600 L minimum) with extensive live rock offering natural sponge and tunicate growth. Feed a specialized sponge-based angelfish diet alongside frozen mysis, krill, and Spirulina. Transitioning wild specimens to prepared foods requires patience and dedication. Not reef-safe. Provide excellent, stable water quality. Source only from vetted, responsible suppliers who can confirm proper collection.
