Puntigrus tetrazona
Also known as: Tiger Barb, Sumatra Barb
Origin: Southeast Asia (Sumatra, Borneo)
Native to the clear and blackwater streams of Sumatra and Borneo, the Tiger Barb is a mid-level schooling fish that thrives in well-oxygenated, slightly acidic water. Males spar constantly within the group, establishing hierarchy through chasing and display rather than serious fighting. Their vivid colouration and fast-moving schooling behaviour make them one of the most captivating cyprinids in the hobby.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.0–7.5, moderate hardness (GH 5–15). Tank: 80 L minimum; planted with open swimming space and good filtration. Feeding: Omnivore; accept flakes, micro-pellets, and frozen/live foods (bloodworm, daphnia). Behaviour: Semi-aggressive fin-nipper; keep in groups of 8+ to redirect aggression inward. Compatibility: Avoid long-finned or slow species; pair well with other barbs, larger tetras, and robust danios.
