Puntius tetrazona
Also known as: Tiger Barb Female Group, Tiger Barb
Origin: Sumatra, Borneo
Puntius tetrazona females are noticeably more robust and deeper-bodied than males, lacking the males' vivid red snout and brighter colouration but still displaying the iconic black-banded tiger pattern. Keeping female-only or female-heavy groups reduces the species' notorious fin-nipping behaviour, making them more suitable companions for community tanks. They are hardy, adaptable, and long-lived when given the space and company they require.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 5–15). Tank: 80 L minimum; open swimming space with robust planting around the edges. Feeding: Omnivore — quality flakes, pellets, live or frozen invertebrates, blanched greens. Behaviour: Active schooler; large groups (8+) reduce fin-nipping behaviour significantly. Compatibility: Best with robust, active mid-water fish; avoid angels, bettas, and long-finned species.
