Botia hymenophysa
Also known as: Tiger Botia, Tiger Loach, Banded Loach
Origin: Myanmar, Thailand
Botia hymenophysa, commonly known as the Tiger Botia Loach, is one of the larger and more assertive members of the genus. Found in rivers and streams throughout Myanmar and Thailand, this species reaches up to 20 cm and demands spacious accommodation. Its striking orange-yellow body crossed by irregular dark bars gives it a true tiger-like appearance that draws attention in any large display aquarium.
Despite its impressive size and semi-aggressive reputation, the Tiger Botia coexists well with robust, similarly sized tankmates. It is best kept in a group of at least four to six individuals, which diffuses aggression and encourages natural shoaling behaviour. The aquarium should feature ample hiding places — overturned pots, large caves, and tangles of driftwood — as well as a smooth sandy substrate for burrowing.
Feeding is straightforward: the Tiger Botia accepts most meaty sinking foods including carnivore pellets, frozen shrimp, bloodworm, and earthworm. Occasional plant matter rounds out the diet. Strong filtration and regular water changes are essential, as larger loaches produce significant waste.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 24–29°C, high oxygen, moderate to strong flow to mimic river habitat. Tank: 200 L minimum for a small group; sandy substrate, large cave hides, robust plants or silk alternatives. Feeding: Carnivore/omnivore sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, shrimp, earthworm; occasional vegetable matter. Breeding: Not recorded in home aquaria; likely migratory in the wild. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; best with large, robust tankmates; avoid small, slow, or long-finned species.
