Merodontotus tigrinus
Origin: Upper Amazon basin, South America
The Tiger Catfish is a rare and highly sought-after pimelodid from the upper Amazon system, featuring a dramatic pattern of bold black vertical bars on a white to pale yellow body that bears a striking resemblance to the Pseudoplatystoma tiger shovelnose. A distinct genus, it is even rarer in the hobby and commands premium prices. Like other large pimelodids, it is an active, predatory catfish that requires a massive aquarium and long-term commitment from its keeper.
Requires an aquarium of at least 1,500 L with powerful filtration and regular large water changes. Feed large meaty foods: whole fish, prawns, large earthworms, and quality large catfish pellets. Do not house with fish small enough to be swallowed. Provide large hiding spots. This fish can live 15–20 years and will outgrow most home setups — only acquire with a long-term plan. Aggressive toward similarly sized or smaller fish.
