Neritina turrita
Origin: Southeast Asia
The Tiger Nerite Snail has a striking dark olive shell overlaid with irregular amber, brown, and black tiger-like markings, making it one of the most attractive Nerite varieties available for freshwater aquariums. Like all Nerites it is a highly effective and tireless algae grazer, consuming film algae, diatoms, and green spot algae from glass, rocks, and hardscape. Importantly, Nerites cannot reproduce in freshwater — their larvae require brackish or marine conditions — preventing population explosions common with other snail species.
Maintain in a mature aquarium with established algae growth on surfaces. Supplement with dried nori or algae wafers if natural algae is insufficient. Requires good water quality and slightly alkaline pH for shell health — acidic water dissolves the shell over time. Will attempt to escape above the waterline; ensure a tight-fitting lid or keep water level slightly below the rim. Do not use copper-based treatments.
