Astronotus ocellatus
Also known as: Tiger Oscar, Oscar, Velvet Cichlid
Origin: South America (captive line)
The Tiger Oscar represents the natural colour expression of Astronotus ocellatus, with irregular orange-red blotches and vermiculations on a rich dark olive-black background. This pattern is reminiscent of a tiger's stripes, giving the morph its popular name. The characteristic ocellus (eye-spot) at the tail base is clearly defined in quality specimens.
Tiger Oscars share all the traits that have made the Oscar one of the most popular large cichlids worldwide: exceptional intelligence, strong owner recognition, and a boldness that makes them natural centrepiece fish. They are curious, interactive, and will readily accept food from their keeper's hand when well-established.
As with all Oscars, the Tiger variant grows large and produces substantial waste, requiring a robust filtration system and large aquarium. Its tolerance of moderate husbandry errors makes it accessible to intermediate aquarists, though its long potential lifespan of 15 years demands a serious long-term commitment.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5; soft to moderately hard water; weekly 30–40% water changes essential. Tank: Minimum 400L; external canister or sump filtration; minimal décor as Oscars rearrange their environment. Feeding: Carnivore; large pellets, frozen krill, prawns, earthworms; avoid live feeder fish to prevent disease. Breeding: Monogamous pair bond; flat rock spawning substrate preferred; very protective parents. Compatibility: Aggressive; keep with other large cichlids; will consume smaller fish.
