Alpheus bellulus
Origin: Indo-Pacific
The Tiger Pistol Shrimp (Alpheus bellulus) produces a loud snapping sound from its pistol claw to stun prey and communicate. It excavates elaborate burrows and forms a fascinating mutualistic partnership with Watchman Gobies — the goby provides eye-sight as early warning while the shrimp maintains the burrow. A captivating pairing.
Fine, deep sand substrate for burrow excavation. Reef-safe. Keep with a compatible Watchman Goby (Stonogobiops, Cryptocentrus species) for best behaviour display. Feed sinking meaty foods. Will snap audibly — this is normal and harmless to humans (at safe distance).
