Peckoltia compta (L037)
Also known as: Tiger Pleco, L037 Pleco, Xingu Tiger Pleco
Origin: Rio Xingu, Brazil
The Tiger Pleco (L037) is a visually commanding loricariid from the rocky, fast-flowing sections of the Rio Xingu in Brazil. Its most striking feature is the bold alternating black-and-yellow tiger striping that covers the body and extends into the fins, making it one of the most recognisable L-numbers in the hobby. It is an active and somewhat assertive species compared to many of its relatives.
As a predominantly carnivorous species, L037 requires a protein-rich diet in captivity. Offer sinking carnivore pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and mussel regularly. Driftwood is important for shelter and as a supplemental food source. The aquarium must provide strong water flow and high oxygenation to replicate the Xingu rapids environment.
The Tiger Pleco can be semi-aggressive, particularly toward conspecifics competing for cave territory. It is best housed as a single specimen of its kind, with robust mid-water fish as tankmates. Excellent water quality is paramount — any deterioration in conditions quickly results in loss of the vivid tiger colouration and compromised health.
Water: pH 6.0–7.2, temperature 26–30°C, GH 2–10, KH 1–5; strong flow and high O₂ essential. Tank: 180 L minimum; rocky decor, multiple caves, powerful filtration and powerhead. Feeding: Carnivore; sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, mussel, and driftwood supplement. Breeding: Cave spawner; rarely bred; warm high-flow conditions and protein-rich conditioning required. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive with conspecifics; compatible with robust mid-water community fish.
