Hypancistrus sp. L202
Also known as: Tiger Pleco, L202
Origin: Rio Orinoco, Venezuela
Hypancistrus sp. L202, the Tiger Pleco, is a medium-sized loricariid from the Rio Orinoco tributaries of Venezuela. Its body displays bold alternating transverse bands of dark brown-black and pale cream-white running perpendicular to the body axis, creating a clean and striking tiger-stripe pattern. It is closely related to the Zebra Pleco group but represents a distinct Venezuelan Orinoco population.
The Tiger Pleco L202 reaches approximately 12 cm and thrives in warm (26–30°C), well-oxygenated water with moderate to strong flow. A tank of at least 100 L with caves, smooth rocks, and driftwood suits it well. Its omnivorous diet should include both meaty and algae-based sinking foods. Males are territorial toward each other and each require their own cave.
Breeding follows the standard Hypancistrus cave-spawning pattern and is achievable in captivity. The Tiger Pleco is a rewarding species for hobbyists interested in expanding their collection of striped L-number plecos beyond the ubiquitous Zebra Pleco. It is more regularly available and significantly less expensive than L046.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard; moderate to strong flow with good oxygenation. Tank: Minimum 100 L; caves (one per male), smooth rocks, driftwood. Feeding: Omnivore; bloodworms, brine shrimp, algae wafers, Repashy, high-protein sinking pellets. Breeding: Cave spawner; male guards clutch; moderately achievable with stable warm conditions. Compatibility: Peaceful with community fish; males territorial toward each other near caves.
