Merodontotus tigrinus
Also known as: Tiger Shovelnose Zebra, Zebra Catfish, Tigrinus Catfish
Origin: Western Amazon basin
Merodontotus tigrinus is a monotypic genus found in the upper Ucayali and other western Amazonian tributaries of Peru and Bolivia. Its bold, sharply defined vertical black-and-white banding is unique among pimelodids of comparable size and makes it instantly identifiable and visually spectacular. Very few specimens reach the export market in any given year.
In biology and care requirements it closely parallels other large shovelnose catfish. It is a powerful, active predator requiring an enormous tank with excellent filtration and pristine water quality. The species is particularly sensitive to elevated nitrates and ammonia spikes and requires strict water change discipline.
The Tiger Shovelnose Zebra is a significant investment and should only be attempted by keepers with substantial experience maintaining large predatory pimelodids. Its rarity and visual impact make it the crown jewel of any large South American catfish collection.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft water preferred; nitrates under 10 ppm. Tank: Minimum 1000L; long tank, powerful filtration, smooth minimal décor. Feeding: Carnivore; whole prawns, fish fillets, frozen squid; feed 3 times per week. Breeding: No captive breeding records. Compatibility: Aggressive predator; large robust South American species only.
