About

Crenicichla tigrina is without question one of the most visually spectacular freshwater fish in the world, a masterpiece of cichlid evolution from the Rio Tocantins in Pará state, Brazil. The 'tiger pike cichlid' name is no exaggeration — dominant males in peak condition display vivid tiger-like orange and black transverse banding overlying a luminous body, with additional blue-green iridescence in the dorsal and caudal fins. It is the undisputed jewel of the Crenicichla genus.

As a Tocantins endemic, C. tigrina demands warm (24–28°C), soft, slightly acidic water in an aquarium designed to showcase it fully. The tank should feature a dark substrate, carefully placed flat rocks and driftwood providing both spawning sites and territorial structure, and quality lighting to bring out the extraordinary colouration. At only 18 cm it is a more manageable size than many spectacular cichlids, requiring a 180 L species tank.

C. tigrina is considered advanced due to its strict water quality requirements, sensitivity to poor conditions, and the premium associated with its rarity. Export from Brazil is restricted and specimens are expensive — but for the serious cichlid collector this is the ultimate prize in the pike cichlid world. Captive breeding efforts are of great conservation and hobbyist value.

Care Guide

Water: Soft, slightly acidic (pH 5.5–6.8) at 24–28°C; pristine water quality absolutely essential — RO water recommended. Tank: 180 L species tank with dark substrate, flat stones for spawning, driftwood, and quality lighting. Feeding: High-quality frozen carnivore foods; live prey for colour development and breeding condition. Breeding: Cave/rock spawner; requires perfect water and a strongly bonded pair; captive breeding highly valued. Compatibility: Strict species tank; this is the crown jewel of any Crenicichla collection — protect it accordingly.
