Tilapia joka
Also known as: Tilapia Joka, Joka Tilapia
Origin: West Africa (Sierra Leone)
Tilapia joka is a distinctive West African tilapiine from Sierra Leone with barred flanks and a deep, laterally compressed body. It is an omnivore with a preference for plant material and algae, and practices maternal mouthbrooding. It requires a large aquarium with robust décor due to its tendency to uproot plants.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, moderate hardness tolerated. Tank: Minimum 200L; tough rockwork and bogwood; use robust or artificial plants. Feeding: Cichlid pellets with vegetable content, spirulina flake, blanched vegetables, and invertebrates. Behaviour: Mouthbrooder; females carry eggs and larvae; can be aggressive around spawning time. Compatibility: Keep with large robust cichlids or West African species of similar size.
