Barbonymus schwanenfeldii
Also known as: Tinfoil Barb
Origin: Southeast Asia (Thailand, Sumatra, Borneo)
Barbonymus schwanenfeldii is one of the largest commonly kept barbs, capable of reaching 35 cm in a spacious aquarium. Native to the large rivers and floodplains of the Mekong, Chao Phraya, and Malay Peninsula, it is a powerful, fast-moving schooling fish that requires a very large tank. Despite its size it is a peaceful species towards fish too large to eat, making it suitable for large community or monster fish displays.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness (GH 5–15). Tank: 400 L minimum; powerful filtration; no delicate plants (will be eaten). Feeding: Omnivore/herbivore; pellets, vegetables, blanched greens, algae wafers, and protein foods. Behaviour: Peaceful schooler; keep in groups of 5+; very active and needs space to turn. Compatibility: Only suitable with large robust fish — cichlids, large catfish, other large cyprinids; will consume small fish.
