Danio tinwini
Also known as: Tinwini Danio, Gold-ring Danio
Origin: Myanmar
Danio tinwini is one of the smallest members of the Danio genus, rarely exceeding 2.5 cm in length. It originates from small, clear hill streams in Myanmar and is immediately recognised by its dark body overlaid with rows of golden to yellow spots arranged in a regular horizontal pattern, creating a constellation-like effect that is particularly striking under aquarium lighting.
In the aquarium it is entirely peaceful and works best in a dedicated nano planted tank where its tiny size can be fully appreciated. A group of ten or more individuals will school tightly and display their full colour, especially when well-conditioned on small live and frozen foods. The species prefers clean, well-oxygenated water with a gentle current.
Danio tinwini has historically been confused with related spotted species including Brachydanio tinwini; modern taxonomy places it firmly within Danio. It is an increasingly popular nano species and a perfect companion for CPD, Microdevario, and nano rasbora species.
Water: Temperature 20–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard; pristine water quality critical given the species' small size. Tank: Minimum 30 L nano tank; dense planting with fine-leaved plants; gentle filtration to avoid current that overwhelms this tiny fish. Feeding: Micro-pellets, crushed flake, and micro frozen foods such as cyclops and rotifers; live micro-worm and baby brine shrimp accepted eagerly. Breeding: Egg-scatterer over fine mosses and plants; fry are extremely small and require green water or infusoria as a first food. Compatibility: Peaceful with all nano species; ideal with CPD, Microdevario, Boraras rasboras, and nano shrimp colonies.
