Pseudacanthicus sp. L081
Also known as: Titanic Pleco, L081
Origin: Rio Orinoco, Venezuela
Pterygoplichthys sp. or Pseudacanthicus sp. L081, the Titanic Pleco, is a large and impressive loricariid from the Rio Orinoco system in Venezuela. Its dark brown-grey body is adorned with a dense constellation of white to cream spots, and it grows to a substantial 40 cm — genuinely titanic among aquarium plecos. It is a rare species in the hobby, making it highly coveted by serious collectors.
The Titanic Pleco requires a very large aquarium — a minimum of 400 L is recommended — with powerful filtration, large caves or overhangs for shelter, and robust tankmates that can coexist with a dominant large catfish. Its omnivorous diet should be broad: large sinking pellets, whole prawns, mussels, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables all have a place in its diet.
Due to its size and territorial nature, the Titanic Pleco is best kept as a solitary specimen with robust dissimilar tankmates. It can be semi-aggressive toward other large plecos and should not be kept with small or delicate fish. Water quality must be maintained impeccably given the heavy bio-load this large species produces.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 6.0–7.5, moderately soft; extremely high-capacity filtration and strong flow essential. Tank: Minimum 400 L; very large caves or overhangs, smooth boulders, driftwood, robust tankmates only. Feeding: Omnivore; large sinking pellets, whole prawns, mussels, algae wafers, blanched vegetables. Breeding: Cave spawner; virtually never achieved in captivity due to size and space requirements. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive toward other large plecos; peaceful with robust, similarly large community fish.
