Poecilia reticulata var.
Also known as: Tokyo Guppy, Tokyo Show Guppy
Origin: Captive bred (Japanese show lineage)
The Tokyo Guppy is a Japanese show strain developed to combine multiple high-impact colours in a single fish, typically featuring a red anterior body, blue iridescent flanks, and a large fan tail with bold black edging. The result is one of the most visually complex guppy strains available.
Japanese show strains are bred to demanding NSGJA (Nippon Swordtail Guppy Judge's Association) standards, giving Tokyo Guppies excellent fin symmetry and body proportions alongside their vivid colouration.
These fish benefit from stable water parameters and a diet heavy in colour-enhancing foods. Pair with females from the same lineage for reliable offspring quality.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 10–20; consistency is key for Japanese show strains. Tank: 60 L minimum; low-flow, planted; excellent lighting for full colour appreciation. Feeding: Colour flake, spirulina, live or frozen Artemia and Daphnia; 3 small meals daily. Breeding: Livebearer; breed from show-quality pairs only; grow fry in species tank. Compatibility: Best in a show-strain or gentle community tank; avoid boisterous species.
