Amphiprion frenatus
Origin: Western Pacific, Japan to Indonesia
The Tomato Clownfish is a bold and resilient species sporting a vivid tomato-red to orange-red body with a single white head bar. One of the larger clownfish species, adults develop an impressively robust, muscular appearance as juvenile secondary bars disappear with maturity. An extremely hardy and adaptable species, it is one of the most widely recommended beginner marine fish, though it will aggressively defend its territory and anemone host.
Provide a host anemone if possible (Entacmaea quadricolor is the preferred host); will thrive without one but anemones promote more natural behavior. Feed a varied diet of frozen mysis, Artemia, Spirulina-enriched flake, and quality marine pellets twice daily. Keep as a single specimen or mated pair — aggressive toward other clownfish species. Reef-safe toward corals outside its defended territory.
