Tomocichla asfraci
Also known as: Asfrac's Cichlid
Origin: Panama
Tomocichla asfraci is one of the rarest Central American cichlids in the hobby, known primarily through specialist cichlid societies and dedicated breeders. Native to Pacific slope rivers in Panama, it is a large, elongated species adapted to life in fast-flowing, well-oxygenated currents. Its body plan is more fusiform than most CA cichlids, a clear adaptation to high-velocity water.
Coloration in adults includes subtle blue-green iridescence on the flanks with faint lateral banding. The species is not as dramatically colored as some congeners but compensates with its rarity value and interesting rheophilic behavioral repertoire — it actively seeks out flow and will position itself facing into the current for much of the day.
Aquarists taking on T. asfraci should be prepared to provide strong circulation and high dissolved oxygen, as inadequate flow will result in rapid health decline. This is a rewarding species for the dedicated specialist with appropriate infrastructure.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 5–15, KH 2–8; very high flow and dissolved oxygen mandatory. Tank: 500 L minimum; open swimming corridor, flat rocks in the current; high-capacity filtration and flow pumps. Feeding: Omnivore — quality cichlid pellets, frozen mysis, shrimp; feed in the flow path. Breeding: Rheophilic spawner on rocks in current; eggs fanned actively; biparental care. Compatibility: Other large rheophilic species; avoid still-water cichlids in the same setup.
