Tomocichla tuba
Also known as: Tomocichla tuba
Origin: Central America
Tomocichla tuba is found in rapidly flowing, highly oxygenated rivers on both Atlantic and Pacific slopes of Costa Rica and Panama. Its stream-adapted body is more elongated and muscular than typical cichlids, reflecting its life in strong currents. Colouration is muted but dignified — olive to tan with subtle dark barring. It requires high water turnover and oxygenation in captivity. Though uncommon in the hobby, it is greatly appreciated by biotope enthusiasts.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate to hard (GH 10–20); high flow and oxygen essential. Tank: 500L+ for adults; smooth river cobbles and boulders; very strong filtration and circulation. Feeding: Omnivore; quality pellets, frozen foods, and benthic invertebrates; feed 1–2x daily. Behaviour: Aggressive; highly territorial in breeding season; rheophilic — needs strong current. Compatibility: Best as a species pair; not suitable for typical cichlid community setups.
