Barbus toppini
Also known as: Toppin's Barb, East African Barb
Origin: East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania)
Barbus toppini is distributed across river systems of Kenya and Tanzania, inhabiting vegetated river margins, floodplain streams, and lake tributary zones. It is a slender, elongated barb with a silvery body bearing a thin, well-defined dark stripe along the lateral line and subtly orange-tinted fins — most prominent in males and during the breeding season. It is named after the naturalist C.H. Toppin who collected specimens in early twentieth-century East Africa.
In the aquarium this species is hardy, adaptable, and peaceable. It schools readily in groups of six or more and is at its most impressive in a larger, well-planted tank where the school can sweep back and forth across open water. Standard tropical conditions suit it well, and it tolerates a range of water hardness reflecting its presence in both soft upland rivers and harder lowland systems.
Feeding is effortless. Barbus toppini accepts flake, micro-pellets, frozen invertebrates, and blanched vegetable matter. Its calm temperament makes it suitable for virtually any African community aquarium alongside tetras, killifish, and smaller cichlids.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderate hardness (GH 4–18). Tank: 80 L minimum; open swimming space, planted margins, sandy or fine gravel substrate. Feeding: Omnivore; flake, micro-pellets, frozen daphnia, bloodworm; not fussy. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; fine plants or mops; remove adults post-spawning. Compatibility: Peaceful; suitable with tetras, killifish, and small cichlids in African community tanks.
