Tor Mahseer

Tor tor, the Tor Mahseer or simply Mahseer, is one of South Asia's most celebrated and revered large cyprinids, inhabiting the fast-flowing, boulder-strewn rivers and hill streams of India and Nepal. It is a fish of imposing stature, with large, distinctive scales that develop a golden or bronze tinge in adults, a deeply forked tail, and a powerful, muscular body built for life in strong currents.

In the aquarium — or more accurately the very large aquatic display — Tor tor demands exceptional filtration, extremely high oxygen levels, and strong water movement to replicate its natural habitat. It is a peaceful giant despite its size, feeding primarily on fruits, invertebrates, and plant matter that falls into the river. It is not predatory in the conventional sense.

Tor tor is listed on the IUCN Red List as Vulnerable and should only be sourced from reputable captive-breeding programs or licensed aquaculture facilities. It is a genuinely iconic fish that commands respect both in the wild and in the aquarium.

Water: Temperature 18–24°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 5–15; very strong flow and extremely high oxygenation are non-negotiable for long-term health. Tank: Minimum 1000 L; large sump filtration; strong powerheads for flow; smooth boulders and gravel substrate; no delicate plants. Feeding: Omnivorous; large pellets, fruits, earthworms, prawn, and vegetable matter; feed generously given the large adult size. Breeding: Not bred in standard home aquariums; conservation aquaculture programs exist in India and Nepal. Compatibility: Peaceful toward other large fish; do not house with small fish; suitable companions are large barbs, large catfish, and robust loaches.
