Euphyllia glabrescens
Origin: Indo-Pacific, Coral Triangle
Euphyllia glabrescens, the Torch Coral, sports long, flowing tentacles with a single rounded glowing tip at each end, resembling clusters of luminescent torches swaying in the current — an effect particularly striking under blue actinic lighting. One of the most aggressive Euphyllia species, it deploys potent sweeper tentacles at night that can seriously damage corals placed within 15–20 cm. Despite this, many hobbyists keep it as a prized centrepiece given its dramatic appearance and moderate care requirements.
Place in moderate, indirect flow under medium reef lighting (80–150 PAR). Allow at least 20–25 cm clearance on all sides for sweeper tentacles extended at night. Supplement with regular target feeding — frozen mysis, reef roids, or liquid coral food twice weekly. Maintain stable Alk (8–9 dKH), Ca (420–450 ppm), and Mg. The torch coral group should not be mixed with Hammer or Frogspawn of different genetic origin as they may fuse or fight.
