Euphyllia glabrescens
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Euphyllia glabrescens, the Torch Coral, extends long, flowing tentacles with rounded tips that sway gracefully in flow — a mesmerising display that makes it one of the most popular LPS corals among reef keepers. The green form with contrasting white or gold tips is the classic trade variety. Torch corals are notable for being host to clownfish (particularly Amphiprion ocellaris and A. percula) in the absence of anemones, providing one of the hobby's most charming natural behaviours.
Medium PAR (100–200). Moderate indirect flow. Alk 8–10 dKH, Ca 400–450 ppm, temp 24–27°C. Maintain 20–25 cm clearance — torch sweeper tentacles are highly aggressive and one of the longest-reaching LPS corals; they will sting and kill nearby corals. Target feed with meaty foods 2× weekly. The 'Torch Coral Disease' (tissue necrosis) has been problematic in some European batches — quarantine new specimens before adding to display.
