Aguarunichthys torosus
Also known as: Torosus Pimelodid, Aguaruna Catfish
Origin: Peruvian Amazon
Aguarunichthys torosus is a monotypic pimelodid genus endemic to upper Amazonian tributaries in Peru, particularly rivers draining the eastern Andean slopes including the Marañón drainage. Its sturdy, torpedo-shaped body and wide, slightly flattened head reflect adaptation to swift upland river conditions.
In the aquarium this species requires well-oxygenated, clean water with moderate flow — conditions replicating Andean foothill rivers. It is an active, bold predator that should be housed only with fish too large to be considered prey. It adapts well to captive feeding and becomes a confident, interactive display fish.
Aguarunichthys torosus is extremely rarely imported and is of interest primarily to dedicated pimelodid specialists. When available it commands a significant premium.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft water; high oxygenation and moderate current. Tank: Minimum 700L; well-oxygenated, clean, open swimming space. Feeding: Carnivore; whole prawns, fish fillets, large pellets; adapts readily. Breeding: No captive breeding documented. Compatibility: Aggressive; large robust South American species only.
