About

Myleus torquatus is a large, deep-bodied serrasalmid from the Amazon basin that displays attractive red-orange colouration on the anal and caudal fins, contrasting beautifully with the silver flanks. It is an active, powerful herbivore that in the wild feeds on aquatic plants, fallen fruits, and seeds in flooded forest environments. Juveniles show more vivid colouration that often matures into richer hues in well-conditioned adults.

Housing this species requires commitment: a 1000-litre aquarium minimum, powerful filtration, and very regular partial water changes are non-negotiable. Like all Myleus, it will eat virtually all soft aquatic vegetation and is best maintained in a tank decorated with rocks, driftwood, and artificial plants. The substrate should be fine sand or smooth gravel, and the water should be soft to moderately hard and warm.

Myleus torquatus is peaceful with comparably sized species and can be kept with other large serrasalmids, big geophagine cichlids, or non-aggressive catfish. It should not be housed with piranhas or aggressive large predators. A plant-rich diet supplemented with high-quality pellets supports growth and maintains the vibrant fin colouration that makes this species so desirable.

Care Guide

Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 5.5–7.0, 24–28°C; excellent mechanical and biological filtration needed. Tank: 1000 L minimum; robust artificial plants or Anubias on wood; open mid-water swimming space essential. Feeding: Herbivore-focused — greens, fruit slices, spirulina wafers, sinking herbivore pellets; occasional protein treats. Breeding: Not documented in home aquaria; would require enormous space and seasonal conditioning. Compatibility: Peaceful community fish with large, non-aggressive species; avoid piranha and aggressive cichlids.
