Vanmanenia stenosoma
Also known as: Torrent Hillstream Loach, Narrow-body Hillstream Loach
Origin: China
Vanmanenia stenosoma is a narrow-bodied hillstream loach adapted to extreme river-torrent environments in China's Guangdong and Guangxi provinces. Its elongated form and powerful adhesive fins allow it to navigate near-waterfall conditions that would overwhelm most fish. In aquaria it requires the highest flow rates of any hillstream species kept and benefits from external powerheads or dedicated hillstream pumps.
Water: 18-24°C, pH 7.0-8.0, hard, highly oxygenated, very high flow. Tank: Minimum 80 L, large smooth boulders, maximum flow rate achievable. Feeding: Biofilm grazer; algae wafers, spirulina tabs, blanched courgette. Behaviour: Extremely active; moves fluidly across surfaces at high speed. Compatibility: Peaceful; keep with other torrent-adapted hillstream species.
