Betta splendens
Also known as: Traditional Plakat, Fighting Betta, Thai Plakat, Short-fin Betta
Origin: Southeast Asia
The traditional plakat is maintained by enthusiasts dedicated to preserving the original form and character of the Thai fighting fish, before the long-fin trait was introduced. These fish are bred for vigour, alertness, and physical condition rather than fin appearance. They are among the healthiest and hardiest bettas available.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to medium hardness — tolerates a wider range of conditions than long-fin varieties. Tank: minimum 20L with a very secure lid; traditional plakats are exceptional escape artists. Feeding: carnivore — live or frozen insects, bloodworm, betta pellets; two feedings daily. Behaviour: extremely aggressive males; the short fins make them faster and more persistent fighters. Compatibility: suitable for community tanks but requires careful observation; will chase smaller fish.
