Tramitichromis lituris
Also known as: Striped Sand Cichlid, Lituris Hap
Origin: Lake Malawi
Tramitichromis lituris is a dedicated sand-sifting haplochromine distinguished by a prominent horizontal stripe running the length of the body. Males in breeding condition develop a beautiful blue-silver nuptial coloration while the stripe becomes partially obscured by the metallic sheen — creating a subtle, elegant pattern that is appreciated in well-lit aquaria with pale sandy substrates.
This species is one of the most peaceful sand-dwelling Malawi cichlids, making it an excellent companion for Aulonocara Peacocks and Lethrinops in a sandy biotope setup. It forages constantly in the typical sand-sifting manner, adding natural behavior to the aquarium. The horizontal stripe also helps differentiate it from sympatric species when multiple sand-dwellers are kept together.
Maternal mouthbrooder producing moderate broods. Females are plain silver-grey with faint striping. One of the best starter species for keepers new to sand-dwelling Malawi Haps.
Water: pH 7.6–8.8, 24–28°C, GH 10–20, KH 10–18; stable clean water; gentle to moderate filtration flow. Tank: 250 L minimum; fine sand substrate 5+ cm deep; open sandy floor; some rocky borders. Feeding: Omnivore sinking pellets, frozen mysis, live blackworm; feed twice daily. Breeding: Easy maternal mouthbrooder; females hold ~3 weeks; very reliable spawner in stable conditions. Compatibility: Excellent with Aulonocara, Lethrinops, other Tramitichromis; one of the most community-friendly Malawi Haps.
