Capoeta capoeta
Also known as: Transcaucasian Barb, Capoeta, Spirlin Barb
Origin: Anatolia, Transcaucasia, Iran
Capoeta capoeta is one of the most widespread members of its genus, ranging across Anatolia (Turkey), the Caucasus (Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan), and into Iran and the Levant. It inhabits a range of riverine habitats from fast mountain torrents to slower lowland rivers, showing considerable ecological flexibility. Adults are moderately large barbs with deep, laterally compressed bodies and the characteristic reticulated scale pattern of the Capoeta genus.
In the aquarium, Capoeta capoeta is a hardy, adaptable species that tolerates the hard, alkaline tap water common in many parts of Europe and the Middle East. It is a cool-water fish — temperatures above 24°C may stress it over time — making it unsuitable for standard tropical setups but ideal for temperate or subtropical aquariums. Groups of six or more exhibit confident, purposeful schooling.
This species is an omnivore with a significant vegetarian component to its diet. Spirulina pellets, algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and sinking omnivore pellets are all accepted. Regular grazing from surfaces supplements its diet. Its size, hardiness, and cool-water tolerance make it one of the most practical large barbs for European aquarists with hard tap water.
Water: 14–24°C, pH 7.0–8.5, moderate to hard (GH 12–30); cool water essential for long-term health. Tank: 300 L minimum (adults); strong filtration; open swimming space; robust plants. Feeding: Omnivore; spirulina pellets, algae wafers, blanched vegetables, sinking pellets. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; cool, flowing water conditions required; large size makes home breeding challenging. Compatibility: Peaceful; keep with other large cool-water cyprinids; avoid warm-water tropicals.
