Nanochromis transvestitus
Also known as: Transvestite Cichlid
Origin: Central Africa (Lake Mai-Ndombe, Congo)
Nanochromis transvestitus comes from Lake Mai-Ndombe in the Democratic Republic of Congo and is unique among cichlids in that females display more intense colouration, particularly a vivid pink-red belly, while males are comparatively drab. This reversal of typical sexual dimorphism makes it an extraordinary species for advanced cichlid enthusiasts. Extremely soft, acidic water is essential.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 5.5–6.5, very soft water mandatory (GH 1–4). Tank: Minimum 60L; caves, driftwood, and leaf litter; very clean, well-oxygenated water. Feeding: Micro pellets, frozen cyclops, daphnia nauplii, and live artemia. Behaviour: Female-dominant; females court males and aggressively defend spawning caves. Compatibility: Species tank or with unobtrusive small surface fish only due to specific water requirements.
