Labeotropheus trewavasae
Also known as: Trewavasae Cichlid, Trewavasae Mbuna
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
Labeotropheus trewavasae is one of two Labeotropheus species, characterised by a strongly downturned, sub-terminal snout that allows it to efficiently scrape algae from steep rock faces. Females come in multiple colour morphs including vivid orange, while males are typically blue-black. It is a hardy species that is among the most common mbuna in the hobby.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.5-8.5, hard alkaline; tolerates stable hard water well. Tank: 200L minimum with large flat rock surfaces for algae-scraping behaviour. Feeding: Algae-dominated diet; spirulina products essential; minimal protein to prevent bloat. Behaviour: Active algae grazer; typical mbuna aggression level. Compatibility: Standard mbuna community setup; suitable with most mbuna.
