Clibanarius tricolor
Origin: Caribbean
The Tricolor Hermit Crab is one of the most commonly recommended clean-up crew invertebrates for reef aquariums, immediately recognizable by its vivid blue, red, and white banded legs. Highly active and efficient, it grazes continuously on various algae types and detritus across the substrate and rock surfaces throughout the day and night. Considered one of the most reef-safe hermit crab species available, it is compatible with corals and most invertebrates and poses minimal risk to the aquarium community.
Provide several empty replacement shells of varying sizes for successful molting — inadequate shells may cause the hermit to evict other snails. Feed supplementally with quality sinking foods if natural algae is insufficient. Entirely compatible with most reef species. Do not use copper-based medications. Monitor during introduction for territorial disputes with established hermit crabs.
