Xiphophorus maculatus var.
Also known as: Tricolor Platy, Tri-Color Platy
Origin: Captive bred
The Tricolor Platy is bred for maximum colour diversity in a single fish, displaying three clearly defined zones of red, yellow, and black arranged across the body and fins. The precise distribution varies between individuals, giving each fish a unique look while maintaining a cohesive overall palette.
This variety is particularly popular for display aquariums where the variety within a group creates visual interest. Despite the complex colouration, it is as hardy and easy to keep as any other platy variety.
Tricolor platys are prolific breeders and fry often display good colour expression from an early age, making them a rewarding variety for hobbyists interested in livebearer breeding.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 10–20; standard community conditions suit this variety. Tank: 60 L minimum; planted community aquarium recommended. Feeding: Quality flake, colour-enhancing foods; 2 meals daily. Breeding: Prolific; 20–80 fry per brood; tricolour expression varies in offspring. Compatibility: Peaceful; ideal for all community aquariums.
