Tricuspidalestes dohertyii
Also known as: Tricuspid Tetra, Doherty's Congo Tetra
Origin: Upper Congo Basin
Tricuspidalestes dohertyii is a rarely encountered African characin from the upper Congo system, notable among specialists for its tricuspid teeth — an unusual dental formula for the family Alestiidae. The body is slender and elongated with a subtle iridescent blue-silver sheen that becomes apparent under quality lighting.
This species requires clean, well-oxygenated, soft to moderately soft water replicating the fast-flowing upper Congo tributaries it inhabits. It is best maintained in dedicated African biotope setups alongside other species of similar origin rather than generic community tanks. Groups of ten or more show the most natural behaviour.
Foods should be varied, including high-quality flake, micro-pellets, and small frozen invertebrates. Tricuspidalestes dohertyii is infrequently available in the trade, and specimens should be carefully acclimated to the aquarium with slow drip acclimatisation to minimise stress.
Water: Soft and slightly acidic, pH 6.0–7.0, temperature 23–27°C, GH 1–8, KH 0–4. Tank: Minimum 120 L with moderate current, open swimming space, and fine sand substrate. Feeding: Omnivore; high-quality flake, micro-pellets, frozen daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. Breeding: Not documented in captivity; presumed egg scatterer requiring soft acidic conditions. Compatibility: Peaceful with other small to medium upper Congo species; avoid fin-nippers.
