Apistogramma trifasciata
Origin: Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina
Apistogramma trifasciata is a compact, vividly colored dwarf cichlid from the Paraguay and Paraná river basins of Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina, distinguished by three horizontal body stripes and a bright red dorsal fin edging in males. It tolerates a slightly wider range of water parameters than many Apistogramma species, making it a more accessible entry point into the genus for intermediate keepers. Regular offerings of small live or frozen foods bring out its full coloration and breeding condition.
Provide caves, coconut shells, or breeding pots as spawning sites. Soft to moderately soft, slightly acidic water preferred. Feed frozen bloodworm, Artemia, daphnia, and quality micro-pellets. Compatible with small, peaceful tetras, Corydoras, and rasboras. Males become territorial during spawning — provide visual breaks and adequate space for subdominant individuals.
