Triglachromis otostigma
Also known as: Ear-spot Cichlid, Prop-fin Cichlid
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Triglachromis otostigma is a distinctive and unusual Tanganyika cichlid adapted for life directly on the substrate. It uses its enlarged pectoral fins to prop itself upright on the lake floor — a posture that has earned it comparisons to goby cichlids. The dark blotch near the operculum is a consistent identifying feature.
The Zambian population is the most commonly available form in the trade. T. otostigma is a carnivore that feeds on benthic invertebrates and adapts well to frozen foods in the aquarium.
Despite its unusual posture, T. otostigma is a reasonably manageable species suitable for intermediate Tanganyika hobbyists and adds a unique behavioural dimension to a mixed Tanganyika community aquarium.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 7.8–9.0, GH 10–18, KH 8–16; clean water with low nitrates essential. Tank: 200 L minimum; sandy or gravelly substrate; rockwork for shelter; gentle filtration. Feeding: Sinking cichlid pellets; frozen bloodworm, Mysis, and Artemia; sinks to bottom to feed naturally. Breeding: Presumed substrate or cave spawner; limited captive data; small groups may encourage spawning. Compatibility: Peaceful with non-competing species; excellent in Tanganyika community tanks.
