About

Glyptothorax trilineatus is a sisorid catfish native to the fast-flowing, oxygen-rich hill streams of India, Nepal, and Bangladesh, where its three distinctive longitudinal body stripes — a bold dark central stripe flanked by two paler ones — provide excellent camouflage against the streaked surface of submerged bedrock. The species possesses a specialised thoracic adhesive apparatus formed by the modified pectoral fin bases and surrounding skin folds, which generates suction to anchor the fish against the most powerful torrent currents.

In the aquarium, G. trilineatus is an engaging and active species that is quite different in appearance and behaviour from typical hillstream loaches. It is more elongated and catfish-like, spending time both clinging to rocks in current and dashing between boulders in search of invertebrates and organic detritus. A minimum tank of 120 litres is recommended given its 12 cm adult size and active lifestyle.

This species is significantly less herbivorous than Gastromyzontidae hillstream loaches and requires protein in its diet — sinking carnivore pellets, frozen bloodworm, and small invertebrates are essential components of its feeding regimen. Water temperature should be kept cool, ideally 18–24 °C, reflecting its Himalayan foothill origin.

Care Guide

Water: 18–24°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 4–15, KH 2–8; high flow and very high dissolved oxygen; cool, clean, mountain-stream conditions essential. Tank: 120 L minimum; large smooth boulders creating fast current channels; sand or fine gravel substrate; caves and overhangs for shelter. Feeding: Omnivore with carnivorous lean — sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp; will also graze algae and biofilm. Breeding: Rarely attempted in captivity; no reliable breeding reports in aquaria; treat as wild-only species for now. Compatibility: Peaceful toward other species; may compete with other bottom-dwellers for food; avoid housing with very small fish.
