Tropheops tropheops

Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
The Tropheops is a distinctive mbuna characterised by its downward-angled mouth perfectly suited for scraping algae from rock surfaces. Colouration varies enormously between populations, with males ranging from blue to yellow or orange depending on origin. It is a popular and hardy mbuna suitable for intermediate cichlid keepers.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water; weekly 25% water changes recommended. Tank: Minimum 200L; abundant rockwork with algae-covered surfaces for natural grazing. Feeding: Spirulina pellets, algae wafers, and blanched greens; avoid protein-heavy foods. Behaviour: Males can be aggressive toward females and rival males; harem setup of 1:3 ratio. Compatibility: Mbuna community; works well with Pseudotropheus and Labidochromis.
