Tropheops sp. 'Olive'
Also known as: Olive Tropheops, Olive Mbuna
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
Tropheops sp. 'Olive' is an undescribed Tropheops species distinguished by the unusual olive-green to yellow-green body colouration of dominant males — a striking departure from the blue tones typical of most mbuna. Some individuals show subtle dark barring overlaid on the olive ground, and the dorsal fin may show yellow to golden highlights. Females are typically brownish with faint markings.
The species shares the robust jaw and thick-lipped morphology typical of Tropheops, suited for forceful algae scraping. Like other Tropheops, Tropheops sp. 'Olive' is highly territorial and competitive. Management in a 1M:3–4F harem configuration in a heavily rock-decorated tank is standard. As a maternal mouthbrooder, females hold eggs and fry for approximately 21–28 days. The distinctive olive colouration makes this undescribed form a popular novelty among collectors, though it is less frequently available than named species.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.8–8.5, hard (GH 10–25, KH 6–15); stable alkaline water is essential for health. Tank: 200 L minimum; dense rockwork; minimal substrate planting as this species will destroy soft decorations. Feeding: Algae-only diet — spirulina flake, algae pellets, blanched zucchini; high-protein food causes Malawi bloat. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; female holds 21–28 days; isolate to a quiet tank for brooding to maximise fry survival. Compatibility: Mbuna-only tanks; avoid mixing with other Tropheops to prevent hybridisation; moderate aggression suits Metriaclima company.
